Saved Status

I don’t know if this technically classifies as a tip, but I just discovered something that has escaped my attention for, I don’t know how many years. It’s a small thing; but just another indication of all the nuance and detail that goes into programming.

In the title bar of the main windows in Logic, to the immediate left of the name of the currently open song/session, there is a small document icon of the Logic document type graphic. I never thought about what purpose that little icon served until today.

It displays the saved status of the open song. If changes have been made, the icon appears grayed out. When you then save the song, the icon reverts to its full original colours. Then, as soon as you perform a subsequent edit, it changes back to being grayed out.

The display of that little icon serves as a quick visual indicator as to the saved status of the open song/session. If you have walked away from your computer and come back a while later; you can tell in a glance whether your song has been saved or not.

I know this is a small thing; but now that I think of it, it is quite useful. At a glance, you can see if any changes have been made to your song since you last saved it. This is particularly useful if you are playing it over and over to listen for things either that may need to be edited, or adjusted in the mix.

So, now you know; Logic provides a “saved status” indicator at the top center of every open window. I realize now as I am typing this that it is a Mac OS feature, as the behavior is the same in Word; and so likely most other properly coded OS X applications. It still does not render it any less cool though!
