With North American stock markets at all time highs; investment pundits - expecting that a correction is coming - are all advising to go short, rather than go long at this point. Seems like good sound advice. And in Logic Pro, it can pay to go short as well.
The various windows in Logic are full of little “hot zones” that respond uniquely to mouse clicks. In many cases a long click and a short click can produce different results. Going for the short click in Logic’s three MIDI editing windows offers excellent flexibility for applying quantization values to specific notes within a region.
The Event List, Matrix Editor, and Score Editor Windows all offer quantizing functionality. The Matrix and Score Windows have dedicated Quantize Tools. The Event List, as well as the Matrix Window, have the static “Q” button at the bottom left for applying quantization to selected notes. A long click on this button or with the Quantize Tool presents you with a flip menu of the available quantize values. Releasing the mouse button will apply the chosen quantize grid to the selected notes.
But the Quantize Tools and Buttons also respond to short mouse clicks. After using them once, they remain set at the most recently chosen quantize value. Subsequent short clicks will automatically apply this last used quantize value to selected notes. This is a great way of quickly going through a MIDI Region and fixing specific notes you come across that you want quantized.
So, once the initial values has been set, a short click on note events in any of the three Editors will immediately snap the selected notes to the previously selected grid, with no need to repeatedly scroll through the flip menu that a long click produces. However, should you make further changes via this flip menu to the chosen quantize grid, they will be remembered and applied with future short clicks. This is great for going through a MIDI Region where different notes need to be quantized to different values.
So, sometimes it pays to go short rather than long. In life, love, Logic, and the stock market, there are appropriate times for each
